Retro Inter Miami Shirt – Beckham's Pink Revolution in MLS

Inter Miami CF was officially announced in January 2018 as the 25th Major League Soccer franchise, though the project had been bubbling since David Beckham exercised his option to buy an MLS team back in 2014 – a clause negotiated during his LA Galaxy days. After years of stadium disputes, financial wrangling, and political manoeuvring in Miami-Dade County, the club finally debuted in March 2020, only for the COVID-19 pandemic to disrupt their inaugural season almost immediately. Early years were turbulent. Despite big-name signings like Blaise Matuidi, Gonzalo Higuaín, and Rodolfo Pizarro, results disappointed and the club was fined for salary cap violations in 2022. The turning point came in summer 2023 when Inter Miami pulled off arguably the greatest coup in MLS history, signing Lionel Messi alongside Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and later Luis Suárez – reuniting the legendary Barcelona core on Florida soil. Messi's debut saw him score a last-minute free kick against Cruz Azul, and the club promptly won the 2023 Leagues Cup, their first trophy. The 2024 season brought the Supporters' Shield with a record points haul. Rivalries have formed quickly, particularly with Orlando City SC – the fiery El Clásico de la Florida – and with Atlanta United. In April 2026 the club moved into the spectacular new Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park, leaving Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale behind and opening a new chapter in a history still being written at breathtaking speed.

Though young, Inter Miami already boasts a roster of names that reads like a footballing hall of fame. Lionel Messi stands at the centre of it all – the Argentine maestro, World Cup winner and eight-time Ballon d'Or laureate, whose every touch in pink is filmed, photographed, and frozen in fan memory. Around him cluster his old Barcelona comrades: Sergio Busquets, the metronome of a generation; Jordi Alba, the overlapping fullback who made a career from Messi's diagonal passes; and Luis Suárez, the Uruguayan warrior whose goals added bite to Miami's attack. Before the Messi era, the club relied on flair-filled veterans. Gonzalo Higuaín, the Argentine striker who had shone at Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus, became Miami's first true goalscoring talisman, his brother Federico joining him for a brief family reunion up front. Blaise Matuidi, fresh from winning the 2018 World Cup with France, brought European know-how to the midfield. Rodolfo Pizarro, once Mexico's golden boy, was the club's first ever Designated Player. Managerially, Diego Alonso, Phil Neville, and Gerardo 'Tata' Martino – the former Barcelona and Argentina coach who lured Messi across the Atlantic – have each left their imprint on this young but already storied club.

No shirt in modern MLS is more instantly recognisable than Inter Miami's pink home jersey. From the very first 2020 kit manufactured by Adidas, the club committed to 'Miami Pink' as its primary colour – a flamboyant break from the navy-and-red norms of American sport, inspired by the flamingos and art-deco hotels of South Beach. The black away shirt, adorned with subtle herons in the weave, became an equally coveted design. Each season has brought subtle variations: the 2022 'La Palma' kit introduced palm-leaf motifs, while the 2023 home shirt – the one Messi debuted in – is already the holy grail for collectors, with authentic match-issue versions commanding enormous sums. Shirts featuring the Royal Caribbean front sponsor and the iconic heron crest are most sought after. The 2024 Supporters' Shield-winning kit and limited-edition collaborations, including the retro-inspired 'La Noche' black kit, are particularly treasured. An authentic Inter Miami retro shirt – especially one bearing Messi's number 10 – is already a piece of footballing history.
